It is the oldest of martial arts and known as the mother of all martila arts. "Kalari" means school or gymnasium and "Payattu" means to fight or to exercise. It incorporates strikes, kicks, grappling, choreographed martial art sequences and weaponry as well as healing techniques. The Kalari(practising area) specially constructed by digging in ground forming a sunken area of 42*21*6 feet. This type of Kalari is called "Kuzhikalari". "Kuzhi" means carvings on earth. The practicing area comprises a "Puthara"(Seven tiered platform) in the south-west corner.
