Kalaripayattu Durable Link to this entry

It is the oldest of martial arts and known as the mother of all martila arts. "Kalari" means school or gymnasium and "Payattu" means to fight or to exercise. It incorporates strikes, kicks, grappling, choreographed martial art sequences and weaponry as well as healing techniques. Kalaripayattu has been widely used in Kerala by warriors to meet their enemies.

The Kalari(practising area) specially constructed by digging in ground forming a sunken area of 42*21*6 feet. This type of Kalari is called "Kuzhikalari". "Kuzhi" means carvings on earth. The practicing area comprises a "Puthara"(Seven tiered platform) in the south-west corner. The guardian diety is located here.
