Kathakali |
|
© Mallikarjuna.D.G. Kathakali, literally meaning ‘Story-play’, is a dance drama originated in the 17th century in Kerala. © Mallikarjuna.D.G. The themes of the Kathakali are religious in nature. They typically deal with the Mahabharatha, Ramayana and the ancient scriptures known as the Puranas. This is performed in a text which is generally Sanskritised Malayalam. © Mallikarjuna.D.G. The actors rely very heavily on hand gesture to convey the story. These hand gestures known as mudra, are common throughout much of classical Indian dance. © Mallikarjuna.D.G. The communication among the characters and to the audience, is through an intricate language of hand gestures, used in combination with facial expressions and body movements. © Mallikarjuna.D.G.

Veeragase |
|
Veeragase gets its name from the Hindu legendary warrior, Veerabhadra. According to a legend, the Hindu God Shiva was married to Dakshayini, whose father Daksha was against this marriage and hence bore enmity with Shiva. When he performed yagna, he invited all the Gods except Shiva. Much against Shiva’s wishes, Dakshayini went to the yagna, uninvited and was insulted by Daksha. Unable to bear the insults, Dakshayini jumped into the sacrificial fire. Hearing this news, Shiva got very angry and started to perform the Tandava dance which created turmoil in the world. When one of the sweat drops from Shiva fell on to the earth, it gave rise to the warrior, Veerabhadra who went to Daksha's yagna, disrupted it and killed Daksha. When Daksha's wife pleaded mercy, he regained his life. This story is narrated by the dancers performing Veeragase. © Mallikarjuna.D.G. © Mallikarjuna.D.G. © Mallikarjuna.D.G. The performers of Veeragase are called Lingadevaru and are devotees of Shiva. The dancers put on a white traditional head gear and a bright red coloured dress. They also adorn themselves with a necklace made of Rudraksha beads, a hip-belt called rudra muke, an ornament resembling a snake and worn around the neck called Nagabharana and anklets. The dancers smear vibhooti on their foreheads, ears and eyebrows. They carry a wooden plaque of Lord Veerabhadra in their left hand and a sword in their right hand. © Mallikarjuna.D.G. © Mallikarjuna.D.G. © Mallikarjuna.D.G. © Mallikarjuna.D.G. © Mallikarjuna.D.G. © Mallikarjuna.D.G.

Beetles |
|
Beetles might be the most successful creatures on earth! Their incredible ability to adapt to any environment makes sure that they will exist, probably long after humans have disappeared from earth. One of the most important features of the beetles that makes them distinctly beetles is their elytra, the hard exoskeletal covering over their wings. Elytra have many functions, but the most important is protection for the beetle.
Some species are able to trap moisture on their wings and keep it because the elytra protects it from the heat and wind.
Insects in the order Coleoptera are commonly called beetles. Coleoptera is the largest order in the entire animal kingdom. There are more species of beetles than species of plants! © Mallikarjuna.D.G. © Mallikarjuna.D.G. © Mallikarjuna.D.G.

Sravana Belgola |
|
© Mallikarjuna.D.G. SravanaBelgola, a small town, situated between two granite hills, Indragiri and Chandragiri, is the most important Jain site in South India. This place is 145km from Bangalore and it is dominated by the colossal 17.7m(58ft) high monolithic Statue of Gommateshvara, also known as Bahubali, son of first Jain thirthankara. © Mallikarjuna.D.G. On the summit of the 143m(469ft) high Indragiri Hill, to the south, the statue of the naked saviour stands on an anthill, staring impassively ahead. Entwined around his legs and arms are creepers, indicating the length of time he stood immobile in meditation. An inscription at the base records its consecration in AD 981 by Chamundaraya, the powerful minister of Rajamalla IV, one of the Ganga kings. © Mallikarjuna.D.G.
