Chilika Lake in Orissa is world’s second largest brackish water lagoon. Bird watchers have identified more than 200 varieties of birds here. It is the largest winter refuge in India for migratory waterfowl. The waterspread area of the lake varies from 1165 to 906 sq.km during the monsoon and summer respectively. It has different habitats such as marshes, mudflats, freshwater, openwater with varying depths, salinity and coastal region and vegetation. The different vegetation types include submergent, emergent, mixed vegetation, reed bed and grassland. © Mallikarjuna.D.G.
