Litterateur Dr.G.S.Shivarudrappa(GSS) has been enthroned as the new Rashtrakavi. There have been only two other litterateurs recognized as Rashtrakavis of Karnataka – venerable Govind Pai and Kuvempu. © Mallikarjuna.D.G. © Mallikarjuna.D.G. GSS turned 80 on February 7, 2006. Poetry is GSS’s first love, and then literary criticism. His work in prose – ‘Kaavyartha Chintana’- got him the Central Sahitya Academy Award in 1984. His love for the difficult art of critiquing got a vent when he started a trust to give away an annual prize in this category. The investment came from the prize money he received from the Pampa Award. ‘Moscowdalli 22 Dina’, one of his travelogues, brought him the Soviet Land Nehru Award in 1973. He was awarded the PhD in 1965 for his thesis – ‘Soundarya Sameekshe’, which dwelt upon aesthetic sensibility of Kannada poetry. Kuvempu was his academic guide for his thesis. © Mallikarjuna.D.G. © Mallikarjuna.D.G.
