© Mallikarjuna.D.G. Dvarapala Dvarapala is the armed guardian who stands outside the entrance of the temple or by the door of the inner sanctum. These forbidding figures carry weapons to protect the deity from intruders. The specialty of this Dvarapala is that his stomach is in the shape of a bull. This Dvarapala statue is in the temple at Talakadu, Mysore District in Karnataka. The historic city of Talakadu, situated on the north bank of the Kaveri (Cauvery)river, now lies partly buried under shifting sand dunes. From the 5th to the 10th centuries it was the capital of the Ganga dynasty. See Also: Gatekeeper in Indian Art
