One of the earliest skills developed by man was in the handling of clay.

The movement of the wheel and the pressure of the hands on the clay make new shapes and forms.

The potter slaps the prepared clay in the centre of the wheel, forms it into a cone and rotates the wheel with a stick held in his hand. After it has gathered momentum, he opens the clay with his hand, and pulls the form upwards. The movement of the wheel, the pressure of the hands, creates the form of a pot carrying the imprint of the circular movement and the potter’s own creative skill.
